چکیده

Uniform shear flow is a prototype non-equilibrium state admitting detailed study at both the macroscopic and microscopic levels via theory and computer simulation. It is shown that the hydrodynamic equations for this state have a long wavelength instability. This result is obtained first from the NavierStokes equations and shown to apply at both low and high densities. Next, higher order rheological effects are included using a model kinetic theory. The results are compared favorably to those from Monte Carlo simulation. PACS numbers: 47.20.Ft, 05.20.Dd, 05.60.+w, 0.5.70Ln Typeset using REVTEX

Stability of Uniform Shear Flow

The stability of idealized shear flow at long wavelengths is studied in detail. A hydrodynamic analysis at the level of the Navier-Stokes equation for small shear rates is given to identify the origin and universality of an instability at any finite shear rate for sufficiently long wavelength perturbations. The

Linear instability of planar shear banded flow of both diffusive and non-diffusive Johnson-Segalman fluids

We consider the linear stability of shear banded planar Couette flow of the JohnsonSegalman fluid, with and without the addition of stress diffusion to regularise the equations. In particular, we investigate the linear stability of an initially onedimensional “base” flow, with a flat interface between the bands, to two-dimensional perturbations representing undulations along the interface. We d...

Stability of parallel/perpendicular domain boundaries in lamellar block copolymers under oscillatory shear

We introduce a model constitutive law for the dissipative stress tensor of lamellar phases to account for low frequency and long wavelength flows. Given the uniaxial symmetry of these phases, we argue that the stress tensor must be the same as that of a nematic but with the local order parameter being the slowly varying lamellar wavevector. This assumption leads to a dependence of the effective...

Lamellae alignment by shear flow in a model of a diblock copolymer

A mesoscopic model of a diblock copolymer is used to study the stability of a lamellar structure under a uniform shear flow. We first obtain the nonlinear lamellar solutions under both steady and oscillatory shear flows. Regions of existence of these solutions are determined as a function of the parameters of the model and of the flow. Finally, we address the stability of the lamellar solution ...

Spontaneous generation of pure ice streams via flow instability: Role of longitudinal shear stresses and subglacial till

[1] A significant portion of the ice discharge in ice sheets is drained through ice streams, with subglacial sediment (till) acting as a lubricant. The known importance of horizontal friction in shear margins to ice stream dynamics suggests a critical role of longitudinal stresses. The effects of subglacial till and longitudinal stresses on the stability of an ice sheet flow are studied by line...
